Throne of Blood, directed by Akira Kurosawa (1957), appears to transform the “body” in certain selected images of the film from a merely visual presence into a site for the production of meaning. Accordingly, the research problem focuses on how meaning is produced through the bodily signs of Asaji and Washizu based on Roland Barthes’ three levels of signification; therefore, the aim is to explain how the myth of power is constructed and ultimately eroded through these representations. The main research question is: How do the bodily signs of Asaji and Washizu in the selected images, within the framework of Barthesian semiotics, produce meanings associated with authority and the decline of authority and transform them into a myth of power and its collapse? This qualitative study employs a descriptive-analytical method and a semiotic approach. The research corpus consists of four selected images of Asaji and Washizu, purposively selected for their visual clarity and their potential for analyzing bodily signs. The data are analyzed according to Roland Barthes’ semiotic model at three levels: “denotation,” “connotation,” and “myth.” The findings indicate that gesture, bodily posture, and composition operate at the level of denotation, while control, authority, and its decline emerge at the level of connotation. At the level of myth, the bodies naturalize power while simultaneously revealing its constructed and unstable nature through the representation of vulnerability. Although Washizu represents power through a tense body and Asaji through stillness, both ultimately arrive at a crisis and decline of authority. Thus, the myth of power emerges from the structural symmetry of two contrasting bodies and leads both toward a shared destiny: the erosion of authority.
